I have written about the beautiful Finnish ideological concept on free maternity boxes for newborn babies and their parents previously. It's such a fine and admirable idea that has also had a huge social impact. We saw examples of the boxes from different periods when we visited the Century of the Child exhibition this summer - and read how the content has also been used to affect parents to a more healty and environmental approach; for example is the feeding bottle left out today to encourage breast feeding. So when I read about the Finnish company Almondella that has built its concept upon the maternity boxes with monthly boxes for babies and moms containing carefully selected, environmentally conscious and long-lasting products matching the age and developmental stage of your kid, I thought it was quite ingenious.
Last week we received the musically themed box for Molly, and throughout the week we have had daily music sessions. The girls are so sweet and really vigorous and concentrated with the instruments. The music box contained a wooden drum from Pintoy, that has a really nice sound, a rhytm instrument also from Pintoy, so they can play together, a European Playground CD from Putumayo Kids (we can highly recommend the CDs from Putumayo in general, also for adults - we have quite a collection, and we never tire of the music), and the sweetest squirrel t-shirt in organic cotton from Finnish Papu Stories. Also included was a note on kids and music, describing how early exposure to music improves memory skills, spatial and temporal reasoning and math skills.
I love the way that Almondella thinks all around the theme of the box - and of course that they have an aesthetic and conscious approach towards what we should put in the hands of our kids. Most of the products from Almondella are designed in Scandinavia and have a nice Nordic feeling about them. The idea about a monthly box is quite genial too - because although I love to handpick things for my kids in the tiny shops of Copenhagen, I do find it hard to find the time to do exactly that. The box was such a surprise for the girls, and we had a cosy time opening it together, discovering the treasures within. You can read more about Almondella's concept and conditions here - and see examples of their other beautiful boxes, each with it's own theme.
